Introducing...

But Is It Music...?

Back in October 2003, we conceived our art-philosophy column "But Is It Art...?". The following month, Jaywalker gave birth to the very first edition of "Jam Makers", a column featuring locally-written original musical notation.

In December of last year, while experimenting with genetically-modified print publications, we had a slight accident. Some of our "But Is It Art...?" genes were thrown in the wash with our "Jam Makers" genes. Three months later (the normal gestation period for ideas) brings the arrival of "But Is It Music...?", our new regular music-philosophy column and multimedia experience. 

Each month, we'll discuss a sample of sound which divides opinion along the line "is this music?". We'll go from the mundane to the abstract, and cover sound-room experiments through to published pieces. And you'll be able to find sound samples on the Jaywalker.ca website too.
